Spector is a keylogger for the MAC. If you find the spyware on your computer then someone with access to it has trust issues. Spector is supposed to be invisible to the user but it is a resource hog. In addition to spying on your activities it will begin to slow your computer. You may notice this during startup.

Spector is a keylogger for the MAC. If you find the spyware on your computer then someone with access to it has trust issues. Spector is supposed to be invisible to the user but it is a resource hog. In addition to spying on your activities it will begin to slow your computer. You may notice this during startup.

Here’s how to locate and * permanently kill the program on your Macintosh.

Download evaluation copy of ** Peek-a-Boo. You’ll also need a text editor. Any will work but I like the free Smultron.

Open Peek-a-Boo. Under ‘File’, select ‘Process List’. Search for a process named ‘DriverSPd’. This is the Spector monitoring code. Highlight this file by clicking on it. Under ‘Manage’ click ‘Kill’. This will temporarily disable Spector until you restart your computer.

To permanently disable Spector, use Spotlight to find where DriverSPd is located. It should be in /library/StartupItems/SystemStart/DriverSPd. You cannot delete items from the SystemStart folder but you can replace DriverSPd with an empty file named DriverSPd.

If you are interested in looking at the DriverSPd code, use Smultron to open the file and copy the code to another file.

*You won’t be able to fully uninstall Spector without the password so be careful, as you can re-enable it by replacing the empty DriverSPd file with a functioning DriverSPd file.

** You should be able to replicate Peek-a-Boo functions with MAC’s own ‘Activity Monitor‘.
